Raphael Saadiq is one of the most fashionable musicians in the industry. His style is as classic as his music. The soulful songbird was once the lead vocalist for the 80s r&b group Tony! Toni! Tone! and later Lucy Pearl with Dawn Robinson of En Vogue. Since 2002 the leading man has been creating quite the musical buzz while flying solo. He has been nominated for multiple Grammy’s and has collaborated with artists like Stevie Wonder and Earth, Wind & Fire. His latest project Stone Rollin, released in 2011 was well received by critics for its traditional soul rock sound. Saadiq’s signature sound embodies soul, jazz, rock and funk.

When it comes to style, Saadiq often looks like a Motown recording artist from the 1960s. It is very rare to see the singer in anything other than a sharp suit and tie. In a time when stars are rocking the hipster chic look, Saadiq keeps it classic. In the music video for his single, 100 Yard Dash his simple but bold style takes center stage as he belts his tune.

Saadiq was included in the 2012 Time 100 Most Influential People in the World. The article was written by music legend, Elton John. In the article John states, “Saadiq confirmed that great black music is alive and well and not just a string of hip-hop monotony.” The two stars collaborated on Elton John’s upcoming release, The Diving Board. Saadiq is proof that r&b is still thriving. I believe the only reason anyone would say this genre is not thriving is if they have no idea what r&b music is. You have to dig deep to find the good stuff – it is still out there.
